Catalogue Course Description: This course is a continuation of Music 268B. The emphasis is on further development of skills in sight singing melodies which contain all intervals; melodic dictation which contains modulation; harmonic identification of all diatonic seventh chords and harmonic dictation of chorale phrases which modulate; rhythmic dictation with quarter and eighth beat values and in compound meters. This course is designed for the student pursuing a music major or the student interested in enhancing technical knowledge and skills.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. Sight-sing intermediate level melodies in treble, bass and alto clefs using scale numbers, solemnization or letter names to represent the pitches.
2. Notate from dictation increasingly longer melodies which modulate.
3. Differentiate aurally and in writing all diatonic seventh chords and modulation if it occurs within an harmonic progression.
4. Demonstrate the relationship between beat and a given rhythmic pattern containing quarter and eighth beat values in simple and compound meters.
Materials Needed: Textbook is 1. Benward,
Bruce. Ear Training: A Technique for Listening,
Students will bring their textbook, workbook, music manuscript paper, pencils (#1 or #2) and erasers to every class.
Grades: Grades will be calculated by the following criteria:
Practica Musica and assignments................................................................... 7 %
Participation and attendance......................................................................... 5 %
Quizzes.......................................................................................................... 57
%
Final............................................................................................................... 30 %
Attendance and participation: There is no substitute for attending class. I will take attendance at the beginning of every class. You get 2 points every day for attendance and participation, less if you are tardy, unprepared, disruptive, or leave early. If you are tardy, it is your responsibility to let me know you are here at the end of class.
Practica Musica: Every class period, each student must complete, print and turn in Practica Musica homework.
Quizzes: There will be quizzes at the end of each chapter. The quizzes will be announced one class prior to the quiz. There are NO makeups for quizzes but you can drop your lowest score.
Final: There are two parts
to the final, dictation and individually scheduled sight singing tests. The
dictation final is comprehensive, covering all aspects of the course (and ear
training I and II) and will be on the second to last scheduled day of our
class, during class time.
Notify instructor: Students with a verified disability may be entitled to appropriate academic accommodations. Please contact your instructor and/or the Disabled Students Program Office for further information within the first two weeks of class.
Absences: If you miss class for any reason, you are responsible for missed work, turning in papers on time, and finding out what happened. I will not redo lectures during office hours. Get together with fellow students to share lecture notes. If you are absent more than 4 times, you may be dropped from the class. If you wish to be reinstated you must come and talk to me.
Student Contact List: During the first week of class a student support list will created with student contact information - inclusion on the list is voluntary. If you choose to be included you can be contacted by other students for missed information and if you are absent you may contact anyone on the list.
Office hours: Many students never see their professor during office hours, even if they are having problems. I want you to succeed and I am here to help. If you are having problems, please see me and we will work on a solution. Students are always welcome to stop by during office hours to have tea, share thoughts and show off their musical talents.
Pet peeve: Don’t come to me and ask “I was absent yesterday. What did I miss?” Talk to your fellow students, share lecture notes, do the assignment and then come to me and ask “I have difficulty with problems 6-20 on page 28.” Be specific about questions.
Daily practice is an
essential part of learning aural skills. It is impossible to cram.
Important Dates: Last day to drop without a W is Friday September 4. Last day to withdraw is Friday October 30. Last day of fall semester is Saturday December 19.
Please keep this syllabus as a reference throughout the semester. The syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the instructor. You are responsible for any changes that are announced in class.
