Extra credit for Music 125
Here is my offer for extra credit if you have been lagging in posting online or missing past assignments. If you are going to take this offer, you MUST let me know by Wednesday of week 14 when we return. We will schedule extra presentation in week 15.

1. Go to a concert of cultural music (not rock, not classical, not folk, not pop, not punk, not grunge, not hardcore). Any of the topics we have covered in class are fine. There are concerts every week at Dizzys, Anthology, SDSU, UCSD. Just keep in mind that it must be cultural music. The remaining noon concerts at Mesa won’t work.

2. Create a website on the music, the culture, the group. Include video (links from youtube.com) and/or audio on the music and if available the group. Include a concert report, information about the culture, the genre, the performers, the group. Include any interesting information about politics or fusion, or anything else interesting that comes up in your research.

3. Present your information to the class in week 15. This will be a solo presentation.

This is optional. Extra credit. If you find a concert that will work, great. If you have questions I will be out of email contact for a week.

Please let me know if you are going to do this.

Music 125 Final Projects
Dr. Ramstrum

Topics to Include
Description of music – What characterizes the music? What is unique? What are instruments played? Techniques on instruments? How is the music part of a culture? What is the function of the music? What features of the music are shared with other cultures or styles of music?
Historical background - how did the music develop? What were the influences on its development?
Significant performers – pick a few musicians to discuss that are important to the music either historically or today. Don’t survey all the musicians, go more in depth for a few that are of interest to you.
Cultural influences, how the music has fused with other types of music. Political and cultural issues surrounding the culture or the music.

Outline is due Tuesday November 16. It should be one page, typed and show clearly how you will answer these questions. Do research in putting your outline together. Show on your outline how you will divide up the research.
Bibliography - due Tuesday November 30. You should have at least 10 sources with authors. Wikipedia doesn’t count. The sources can be online but must have someone signing their name. Use standard bibliography format. It should be typed.
Research - each group member must turn in at least 3 pages of typed research on the topic. Your research is due Thursday December 2.
Create your website - your websites should have a combination of music and video and text. http://www.weebly.com/ is where you will create your website. You can link to youtube videos.
Final presentation – in class during week 16. You won’t know when your presentation will occur so you must attend both days of finals to support each other and view the presentation. All group members must be there for the final presentation.

Grade - you will be graded on each step of the process, including timeliness. So get the materials in by the due dates.

Concerts for concert reports

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:03 am

Hi all,
Here are some concerts that you can attend for your concert reports. See Dizzy’s, UCSD music department, and Anthology for more details. Call them directly for details – to check student prices, if they are sold out, times, dates.

For details on what I am expecting, see our class website – http://ramstrum.com/music125/
And you need proof of attendance. If you come to the Mesa concerts, get a program and get it stamped at the end of the program. For other concerts, a ticket stub and program should be submitted with your concert report.

Thanks,
Dr. Ramstrum
